I've had to do that, and never did find the exact right size bulb, did you?

You basically need to take the front fairing off to get to the backside of the
instrument cluster.  I don't remember though if you have to take the
instrument panel off of the bracket to get to that bulb or not but that'll be
pretty trivial once you're in there.  

Do you have the info on removing the fairing?  I have the Haynes and the shop
manual, but need to trade my shop manual for one that covers '03 if anyone out
there knows where I can make such a deal ;^{D
