I'd agree with your thinking, head gasket.  Last year, up at daytona, the guy I rode with blew a head gasket.  Going home his exhaust smelt like coolant vapor and was very white.  

We stopped and he had it towed home.  He told me that there was also coolant in the oil.  He had to flush out every nook and cranny.  Every thing got cleaned though ;-) He said the head and cylinder were clean and sparkly.

Did you smell your exhaust?  Smell like coolant?

My Y2K RS (30k) has started to use a small amount of water (maybe 1/2" per 1000miles) and at last service definitely had some milky residue around the oil filler cap and oil level sighting window.

So I'm thinking head gasket.  Immediate questions are:
