Heya Bryce,

I think the controller I have is an older bi-metal type too.  It was my
understanding that these use resistance to heat the metal, once it reaches a
point it breaks the circuit interupting power to the downstream device
(vest) until the metal cools again and restores the circuit.

The downside of this method is that it allows the wires in the vest to cool
down then they have to re-heat to warm you whereas the heat-troller is
constantly delivering power to the vest in pulses.
