RE: [ST] Sliders

Blake is right; in a major crash, the sliders can add to the damage.

On the other hand, they can save a lot in low-speed or parking lot
dumps. Mine fell over in motel lot in Iowa during the TAA ride in '01
and only suffered damage to the (open) bag.

When totaled, my bike went down on both sides (don't ask) and snapped
the port slider. No damage to the mounting point or the engine. The
starboard side slider bolt was bent a little. In the 20/30 MPH range.

With what the US ins co's pay for totaled bikes, I think you are better
off totaling and getting a new bike than having the old one fixed. You
can always buy it for salvage if you are attached to the thing.

Two folks on this list (myself and Brian D.) had their STs totaled by
frame sliders that broke the engine mounts when absorbing the impact
with the pavement from low-speed (< 30 MPH) accidents.
