Hi Dan

'Scuse the slow reply. I take the digest and I'm in
the UK (several hours ahead) so tend to see messages
next day.

I have the Remus Grand Prix racing carbon. It's a slim
short light oval can. There's a picture of it at
www.motorsports-network.com/aremus/Photos/cans3.jpg
(top right). It looks gorgeous on my bike (a racing
yellow RS).

I got it second hand so don't know it's mileage, but
I've done about 10,000 miles with it and it's still in
very good condition. The sound is not quite as deep
and mellow as the Triumph carbon can at low revs, but
overall it's a bit louder, without being obnoxious.
Although it's a straight-through design the Remus is
inoffensive around town, but takes on a very nice
gruff growl by 5000 rpm (it sounds a bit like you're
in the cabin of a cruising airliner at motorway
speeds), while the bellow it makes still makes my
spine tingle up near the redline. I reckon it makes a
four sound shrill and effeminate.

The Triumph carbon was too quiet for me. But if you
spend most of your time at sub-5000 revs then the
Triumph can may be better. It costs more but it's very
well made. As I said it has a deeper tone at low rpm
without being so loud it attracts the law, so gives a
very pleasant auditory accompaniment to burbling
around town.

ANY open can is better than stock, which was
presumably designed to meet noise and emission laws so
strangles the motor below 3000rpm and messes up low
rpm pull. Counter-intuitively, with a race can AND the
race tune the motor pulls strong and clean almost from
tickover. The tune also increases the redline from
standard (9500 or so?) to at least 10500, while the
can lets the motor rev freely, effectively giving you
about 10% more power at the top end. Not that I ever
go that high these days, I need my license for my job!

Barry
