Thanks to all for the input on my poor hot-engine
idling...I have a few things to poke around at when I
get a moment.  Since my followup message is long in
coming, perhaps I'm on 'scrumpy time' like Barry.

While attempting to discern what 'scrumpy time' might
be, Google led me to:

...leading me to believe that Barry was heavily
intoxicated on a cider involving, improbably enough,
raw meat.  Barry, care to confirm or deny, or to
clarify for a clueless Yank?
