Re: [ST] Tips for flushing cooling system?

Hey Garry,

Anyone have any tips/guidance to share regarding flushing and refilling my cooling system? It's a 2002 RS with the original antifreeze in it. I'm switching to distilled water and Water Wetter for the rest of the summer (track day next week). I'll check the service manual tonight, but I'm pretty sure it's mostly take the cap off the radiator, open the bleed valve on the other side of the radiator and remove the hose on bottom of the engine that hides the thermostat.

Do that, refill it 3 times with clean water, running the engine for a few minutes each time. After 3 flushes (by which time you'll be well pissed off taking the hoses off and retightening them!), the water should be pretty clear. Murky rather than muddy!

Refill with coolant in the right mix, check it's all tight and off you go.

I want to remove the thermostat and verify that it opens at the right temperature. The bike's water temp seems to fluctuate a bit more now than when it was new. Stays between 175 and 185 for the most part though so it hasn't been much of a concern.

After the flush and refill I did a couple of months ago the cooling on my ST is so, so much better. I was in slow lazy traffic today for a few miles, and the temperature only crept up a little. Before I flushed it, it was going onto the cooling fan very quickly in the same conditions. Obviously the new coolant has helped greatly. Well, what would you expect, I s'pose?
