Yes the SSSA setup is different. The bearings are in the hub. One side
of the hub has two of the regular sealed ball bearings you speak of
(19 in the diagram below) the other side has a needle bearing (20 in
the diagram below).

The owners manual says to lubricate the rear wheel bearings every 12K
miles. There is no mention of the front wheel bearings in the owners
manual maintenance schedule which is weird (it covers the ST and RS).

I had my local mechanic lubricate the rear hub/wheel bearings at 27.5K
miles. I watched him do it and I do not remember him needing any
special tools other than a very large socket. He also found the
bearing quite dry.
