The ST does produce heat and my humble opinion is that
post-02 models are "hotter" that 99-01.

That said, heat dissipates with speed and seating a
little farther away from the tank helps. I found a
noticeable difference after putting a Corbin seat on.
It pushes you back about an inch compared to the stock
seat.

Watch your temperature gauge. It should not go higher
than half way up when the engine is running. Otherwise
you may have a cooling problem. A coolant flush (50
coolant/50 distilled water) and a new air filter will
certainly help as well.
