My theory: The front tire is most likely running over the nail or other projectile while it is lying flat doing no damage. The front tire can kick it up so that the rear can now roll over the pointy end.

Could also be because the rear is the tire that's digging into the road surface for traction and not just rolling freely over impedimenta.
