Octane ain't octane.  It's usually trimethyl-pentane or some other
hydrocarbon mixed with other stuff.  Like you said octane ratings were
made so you don't "explode" but burn gas.

I recommend using what the manufacturer recommends and don't worry about
it.  Don't use premium if they say 89 is OK because that actually isn't
"better" just costs more.
