Re: [ST] RE:Octane

Actually, to be precise it's (RON+MON)/2 (brackets needed) -------
i.e.. it's the average of the 2 methods

And as stated here and elsewhere -- the recommended octane rating is 89
(or mid-grade) -- using any higher octane is a waste of money (will not
generate more power unless other changes to tune are made, and will not
improve mileage)

And for the additives that are regulated/legislated -- all grades
contain the same amounts (every brand of gas has it's 'special'
additives, but that's not what I'm referring to)

American 89 octane is the closest. Octane=RON+MON/2 We don't sell gas
in the states as 95RON

I think my manual says to use 95 ROM gas. The pumps here in the US use
a different calculation for octane that yields numbers like 87, 89 and
91. Which of these is the correct stuff?

Octane ain't octane. It's usually trimethyl-pentane or some other
hydrocarbon mixed with other stuff. Like you said octane ratings were
made so you don't "explode" but burn gas.

I recommend using what the manufacturer recommends and don't worry about
it. Don't use premium if they say 89 is OK because that actually isn't
"better" just costs more.
