Octane is a simple hydrocarbon. C8H18 (I think) Big string of 8 carbon atoms with 2 Hydrogens poking off each one, and 2 extras poking off each end.

But it IS simply a measure of the performance of a fuel with respect to Octane and other hydrocarbons, so it's possible to have Octane ratings of >100 if a fuel burns better than pure Octane. (It's OK, I have acids at work which are 102.5% and I don't go mad. Bwibble)
