I recently replaced mine. I was having to lube it fairly regularly.
The new cable is great so far but I think my problem may have been I
was using the wrong type of lube as when I took the old cable off
there was a large build up of Molybdenum/Graphite. I see no reason
that the cable would not last a very long time if looked after.

Garry have you removed the cable and lubed it? There was a recent
thread on preferred cable lube.
