I'd have to say that the BEST thing to use for the frame would be to have it
recoated.
The silver smooth finish hammerite is a pretty close colour match and can be
brush applied without primer so it's probably one of the easiest ways to
achieve an acceptable and durable repair to the finish. Whether it's good
enough for your tastes only you can decide.
Why not try it on a small inconspicuous area and see if it's OK?
Hammerite is cheap :O)
FWIW, the frame finish on my '99 ST was still perfect after 40K miles of all
weather all year use in Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. The only
slight corrosion was on the footrest hangers where boots had worn through
the powdercoat and allowed the weather in. The Hammerite worked perfectly on
those and I'm a fussy Bastid when it comes to my paintwork. :O)
