I'm just speculating but the tank vent could be plugged...

I'm not sure what else would create that kind of vacuum.

I recently bought a really nice '01 Sprint RS via eBay here in New Hampshire where I am working for few months. The bike only has 1050 miles on it and is completely stock. The original owner bought it new in '03.
My question has to do with the 'check engine' light. When I picked it up from the original owner, he had just put in a new battery because he has never ridden it enough to keep the thing charged, and the original battery would now be four years old. He had the bike started and running when I came to pick it up. The 'check engine' light was on, and he attributed this to the bike just not having warmed up yet. It was about 35 degrees that night. After several miles the bike seemed to be running fine, but the light was still on, so I stopped and put gas into it and checked the oil. Thought maybe the 'check engine' light possibly also served as the low fuel warning light. I could barely open the gas filler lid because of the vacuum within the tank. After filling it with gas the light went off and has not come on again (except when you first turn on the key) during the several times I have ridden the bike. I have noticed that the gas tank has a strong vacuum resisting the
gas filler lid again when it was about half empty.
My questions are whether the vacuum in the gas tank is normal, or do I possibly have some tank ventilator gummed up that may have caused the 'check engine' light to have come on? The bike continues to run fine and strong. Wish the weather would improve to the point where I can get some miles on it and run some of the mothballs out of it. There are some good roads around here that I can't wait to explore. A lot nicer than in central flatlands Illinois where I live.
The crummy weather this weekend did allow me to install a Triumph tankbag and a set of Gen-mar handlebar risers. Couldn't believe how easily the Gen-mar risers went on. Just unbolted the bars without undoing any of the control cables or lines, dropped in the spacers, and bolted the bars back into position. No binding of any controls at full lock either direction, and the extra inch and a quarter rise is a major improvement in comfort for me (old short guy with beer belly) because the stock position bars were a bit of a stretch for me. Wouldn't mind an inch or so of additional pullback, but not enough to go to a solution that involves changing the cables and brake line.
Have enjoyed the thread about what bikes people have previously owned. Nice chance to think back fondly over my more than 35 years (yikes!) of biking. Here's mine:
