Re: [ST] Stalling

Jim,
My recommendations, some of which were implied in the other responses:
a) Add a can of fuel system cleaner to your tank, take it out and run
the p*$$ out to it; then,

b) Have your dealer inspect and clean the idle stepper motor as
required, paying particular attention to the possibility of vacuum
leaks. While the air box is off, have them perform other needed
service such as installing new plugs and synching the throttle bodies.

c) Then, have them upload the latest tune. I didn't want to mess with
mine either, 'cos I thought my '01 was running "just fine thanks".
When I did finally upload the latest tune, I was amazed at how much
better the engine pulled - it was noticeably stronger in the low & mid
range with and even sweeter kick from 6 - 8.5k rpm and beyond.

d) After the new tune is uploaded, have them reset the closed throttle
position and zero the idle stepper motor; then set the idle CO to 2.5
- 3%. My guess is yours is set way too rich which would account for
your stalling and lousy fuel economy.

I'm going to work on the bike soon for the 24K mile service, changing

plugs and fuel filter and such. If anyone has ideas on what may
cause the stalling problem, I'd like to see what else I should check
out. I hate worrying that I might get stranded somewhere, especially

far from home.

Other than stalling from idle occasionally, the bike runs well. Fuel

mileage is slightly lower than what others report (39-42 mpg on a
highway run, speeds in the 85-110 mph range, or 42-44 around town and

slower cruising).<
