Re: [ST] headlight relay

If anyone else is going to be bidding on these parts, let me know. I'm in
the market for almost all of the plastic stuff. I don't want to be in a
bidding war with someone I know. Thanks

Yeah. Sure wish I didn't have a pile of financial priorities ahead of
color-matching Skittles, there's a few BRG panels I could use!

Have to be patient, someone else will low-side a BRG Sprint next
year...on the right side!

There is an ENTIRE Sprint being parted out for sale on ebay right now (I
saw wiring and everything....frame, individual gages, you name it).
Check and see if what you need is in there.

I think I'll just go with the Triumph part - I cant seem to find the
same relay at ordinary spares outlets.

Its R183-00, almost seven times the price of the other one I bought. Its
a rip-off, but R183-00 (US$ 25-00) isn't really money - I'll probably
spend more than that charging around trying to get a cheaper one.

What pees me off a little is that the workshop guys originally told me I
would need to book the bike in for some tinkering by their bike
electrician to get both low beams working. Now they admit all I need to
do is plug in a new relay.

I guess I'll have to give them the benefit of the doubt - maybe they
thought I wouldn't be able to handle taking off a side cover and
plugging in a relay?

thanks,

Marc,

IRC the problem you're having is because the relay you're using does not
have a diode in it (I think there's only one, but not positive) and the
relay is drawing current when it shouldn't be. Unfortunately the
schematic in the Triumph service manual does not show the diode inside.

The relays for main and dip headlights are definitely identical. When I
read your earlier reply I was going to let you know that there might yet
be an issue, but I couldn't remember what the symptoms would be, and I
hadn't had time yet anyway as I was out of town today.

So I think what's happened is that the one you picked up from the other
dealership is not an exact match to the other original. But you have
the OEM part number right, so you should be able to get the exact one or
an equivalent. If in doubt just hold your nose and order the Triumph
flavour. As for the other suggested replacements, I'll bet they are
correct, cause I think Rick and Emile have first-hand knowledge that
they work properly. As I said, I've never had to deal with this issue
cause both my original '99 ST and now my '03 RS came with both relays
from the start.
