Here is my two cents:

I learned my lesson this year.

We left late, arrived at 2am at the motel in Carmel exhausted after getting 
lost a few times. We had tickets for Sunday only and left right after the 
race. Big mistake, too hectic. Take the wife only if she reaaaaaalllly likes 
racing. None of that how many more laps, honey?

This year I'm going by myself or with some buddies on the ST. No more 3 hour 
parking lot anarchy trying to exit after the race.
I'm getting general admission tickets for Saturday and Sunday and a paddock 
pass. Don't like sitting in one spot, the booths are interesting too. Forget 
about leaving after the race. Relax, go to town, have a good dinner and a 
good glass of Zinfandel and leave the next morning. Driving down the coast 
is spectacular anyway, make a mini vacation out of it. Otherwise it's not 
worth it. To go there just to see the race is half the fun - you might enjoy 
the TV coverage better. See you guys up there!

PS Would you believe the suites and the premier camp site is already sold 
out even before the general public has a whack at it? Looks like the people 
from last time had first pickings...

That's a bargain--even the cheapest hotels charge over $100 a night
and have three-night minimum stays. Maybe you could camp out at some
of the state parks nearby, though? Generally, state park reservations
aren't allowed more than three months in advance, though.
