[ST] RS fast idle cured!

I took my 2000 RS in for some TLC today, to address the hot fast idle problem that has been growing in severity over the summer. For anyone local, this was to Taylors in Taunton.

I described the symptoms - fast idle in neutral (but not when in gear) when the air temperature was high, plus worsening fuel consumption (now down to just 155 miles per tank). The seasoned mechanic opined 'stepper motor'. So I left it with him and went for a spin on a loan bike for 3 hours (see below).

When I came back it was running beautifully. Not only was the stepper way out (on notch 15, when it's supposed to be at 25-35) but the idle CO was also way out (8% when it should be 3-3.5%). How it got so far out he couldn't say. I suspect the last shop I took it to, a non-specialist dealer! Now it idles beautifully in traffic, in or out of gear, and also seems smoother and crisper on the open road. It'll be interesting to see what the consumption is like.

The loan bike was a T100 Bonneville. Which I rather liked. I was disappointed at first that an 865cc twin could be quite so feak and weeble, but it kinda grew on me as the miles racked up. Lovely and comfy. Soft pliant engine. Great town bike, and surprisingly quick and nimble on the country lanes, but not really up to motorway work. At 85-90 mph where the Sprint is just starting to pick up the bonnie runs out of steam. Fabulous sound from the Triumph off-road pipes though, especially when accelerating hard from low rpm. Eye- and ear-catching, and especially good for making old duffers lift their heads and smile. I wouldn't want to have to rely on it as my main bike, but it would make a great second bike.
