Re: [ST] Oil



There are tons of opinions on this, so I'm sure you'll hear all sorts of advice.  Everything from run any oil and change it often, to is the difference in price worth some possible ill effect, to my grandmother told me....
 
For what it's worth, I did some research when I initially found that the jug of Triumph spec Mobl-1 was around $48. Here is what I found and posted on another list:
 
To note, the red-cap has no JASO rating.  The only reason the red-cap isnât JASO rated is because Mobil didnât pay for the certification (i.e. doesnât mean the oil isnât up to any JASO spec).
 
I have not looked at the specifics of the Mobil-1 Gold-cap, which is the replacement to Mobil-1 red-cap.

Well this is really going to start another oil argument..... 

But as to your questions specifically. "Red-cap" Mobil 1 SuperSyn Fully Synthetic 15w-50 motor oil "Exceeds API Service SL, SJ/CF warranty requirements for gasoline and diesel engines. Meets European ACEA A3/B4-02, B3-98 and Japanese valvetrain wear requirements. Meets MB 229.1" The MB is NOT the JASO standard but rather a well-used Daimler/Chrysler oil standard. According to Mobil, this oil has no JASO spec; but that just means it was not tested for it. 

The Triumph-branded Mobil 1 Racing 4T oil is a 15w/50 fully-synthetic motorcycle engine oil which meets API SG and JASO MA specification. 

After many phone calls to Mobil, the "big" difference between motorcycle and automobile oils is that motorcycle oils have more anti-wear additives because of the engines typically operating at higher rpm. The tech on the phone said, "itâs not a huge difference in levels, but there is a difference." 

Youâll hear all sorts of "I use this and have never had a problem, why use the expensive stuff and waste your money/feed the regime" and "oil is relatively cheap, why skimp a little here" etc. I would say go with what you are comfortable doing. 

If you are looking for recommendations, Iâm sure youâll get plenty. 

One more note, youâll hear all about the difference in automobile and motorcycle oil in that our motorcycles use the same oil on the clutch, and that automobile oil will cause some clutch slippage. Someone finally asked "who has ever had clutch slippage and what oil was it?" Nobody has responded with a specific case. 

Again, do what you want with the information (what weight to use/not use; what specs to go buy/ignore; what price is too much/being cheap).

I am sure this has been on the list before, but it is all new to me.
I am wondering if it is necessary to go to the dealership and get
Synthetic oil or is it good enough to go to the auto store or target
and get any synthetic oil. Any help would be great.
