Re: [ST] Counter Rotating Brakes

I think people believe in body-steering because it works, but not for the reason they think. When you hang off the side of the bike and try to keep yourself from falling off, guess what - you counter-steer by pulling on the outside grip, and applying force on the inside grip. This is also why racers appear to body-steer - they are just generating more leverage for counter-steering by hanging off. And this goes directly to the effort it takes to steer a motorcycle at high speeds. And there is a small amount of body-steering due to the center of gravity being shifted (hence the motorcycle wants to fall to the side, just as explained with counter-steering). Want to prove this? On a straight road, counter-steer and push the bike to one side while shifting your weight all the way to the other side. You continue going straight as the counter-steering and center of gravity cancel each other out, and the bike is stable and goes straight. Or in a corner, push the inside grip
further down while leaning to the outside, and the bike will continue on the same arc.

And before we get into a HUGE argument, counter-steering is the SIGNIFICANTLY greater force at speed. Why? Because of the gyroscopic effect.... Ahh....and it all comes together.......

Amazing stuff... and one of the very few websites
that actually explains all countersteering stuff in
the most correct way. Some people still "believe" in
the body steering myth and a whole lot of people that
actually do "believe" in countersteering still insist
online that precession causes it, mixing up stability
with resistance. Great read and very innovative technology
that makes direct use of this knowledge. Cool...
