Re: [ST] Water Injection

The early 707's that I flew all through the '60s, both straight
pipe and fans, dumped massive amounts of water through the engines on
take-off and initial climb resulting in a huge performance increase.
The greatest advantage was the increase in mass flow through the engine
and the water would run out after a few minutes. Boeing designed it
with two tanks, each with it's own pump; one pump fed the inboard
engines and the other fed the outboards. The Gov't FAA (Fat Assed
Aeronauts), in it's customary fashion, required the design be changed so
that each pump fed a different side of the airplane resulting, in the
event of a water pump failure, in an airplane that tried to turn itself
into a pinwheel.
