So,  to clean chains, people say to use kerosene (which is a PIA to get)
so will diesel suffice (which is MUCH easier to get) ?  Is there a reason
NOT to use regular gas and/or WD-40 ?

Interesting.  In our area, diesel had been [at times considerably] more
expensive than premium for well over a year, in spite of its lower
production costs.  What is the price of diesel compared to gasoline in
your area?
