Kerosene is a good chain cleaner.

Diesel smells and isn't a very good cleaner, and is extremely slippery 
on the tires, not recommended for staying rubber side down.

Regular gas is extremely flamable and probably not very good on the o-rings

WD-40 has always worked as a cleaner (not a lube) for me.
