I can't confirm this from personal experience, but I have read that kerosene is not good for the seals on the chain. Something about an old-school thing that was either find to be long-term detrimental, or something different with newer chains and seals that makes it long-term detrimental. I will try to find the link and post.

Just spray the WD-40 on a rag then wipe on the chain, don't spray it onto
the chain lest you force your grease out from your O or X ring seals.
