Yeah.  Chain cleaning is a pain.  I probably don't do it as often as I should.  I like your method.  However, periodically I'll take a 10W30 soaked rag and wipe the chain off.  Take it for a ride and purge any residual.

I figure if the automatic chain lube thing uses 30 weight oil, then a periodic wipe down won't hurt.

My method of cleaning the chain is:
1) Insert key
2) Start motorcycle
3) Ride, 200 to 400 miles
4) Inspect chain
     If (chain is worn out) then {replace chain}
     Else If (not clean) then {Go To step 1}
