Jeff,
It sounds like you may have an air lock and, yes, your system should be
bled.  Unless you had both upper and lower hoses unclamped and flushed the
system well, pockets of old fluid and air can remain.  After flushing, I
would run the engine briefly while topping off the reservoir.  Water-wetter
seems to have helped my '01 run very slightly cooler, also.
