[ST] Ride report, April 21

Friday, April 21, 2006.
I left work at 2:30 today, went home, packed, and left to meet Bird
Dawg at the Albertsonâs in Frisco at 4:30. On the way north on Highway 423
out of The Colony I saw Bird Dawg at Boyd road waiting on the light so I
pulled into the gas stop, fueled up at $3.19 per gallon and waited about
ten minutes for Bird Dawg who could not trip the red light.
After he fueled we continued north on Highway 423 to Highway 380 and
then east to McKinney to meet Ian.
We made the Chevron in McKinney about 5:05 PM, five minutes late, and
as we pulled in Ian fired his RT1200 BMW up and we were back on the service
road and accelerating on the on ramp up to speed and headed north on US75.
We made good time and soon passed the Red River as I saluted once
more and hit Oklahoma. The casinos seemed to be doing great business today.
As I neared Durant there was Deputy Dawg in the medium waiting for us.
There is often a cop here and I was looking for him but still had to hit
the brakes as a Jeep started to cross in front of me. Right after this we
passed a procession of Porsche 914âs, a 924, and one Boxster heading north.
We waved and they likewise returned the wave as I wondered if they were
headed to the Talimena Drive. All went well and I guided us into the Shell
station we always stop at to top the tanks and grab water before the jaunt
across eastern Oklahoma to Talihina. It was also nice paying thirty cents a
gallon less for fuel in Oklahoma as opposed to Texas.
We were soon on our way north again and then took the loop at
Stringtown onto Highway 43 east toward Daisy and Lake Sardis.
I have run this road too many times to count and still like it a lot.
There are mountain ridges on both sides that start off miles apart and
narrow as you continue east until they converge at Sardis Lake about
fifteen miles west of Talihina.
Today was no exception as the think green foliage was a refreshing
change from the last run during the winter when all except the pine trees
were brown and leafless. The road was just great as we left the traffic
from US 75/69 behind and met about five cars in the fifty mile ride across
Highway 43. The road was in great shape and the different shades of green
on each side of the road made for an excellent view.
Nice sweepers started tightening up as we caught a glimpse of Lake
Sardis on our left and then hit the dam. A quick left and then the two mile
ride across the dam as the sun was low across the lake providing another
nice view.
We then rode the fifteen miles to Talihina and checked into the
Kiamichi Inn. This is a pretty boring fifteen miles to me and luckily it
only last a few minutes. The setting sun did give a different perspective
to it as the low light filtered between tree limbs to a strobe light
effect. The Porsche 914âs were already there and must have passed us as we
gassed up and killed some time.
We checked into the Inn and got a room at the far end of the
courtyard as the Porsche boys had reserved several rooms and were waiting
for their buddies. We walked over to talk to them and found that they were
from the Dallas / Fort Worth area and were indeed here to drive the
Talimena tomorrow morning. I also found that one of the 914âs and the 924
were in attendance at the Auto Cross Driving School I did in January with
the Maverick Region of the Porsche Club of America.
There was a large open area in our room so we offered Ian a place to
throw his bed pad if he wanted to save some money and he took it.
As soon as we unloaded we saddled back up and headed off to dinner.
After finding two locations already closed we settled on the Bikers
restaurant and had a decent and cheap meal before returning to the Kiamichi
Inn.
We talked about what we had in mind for the weekend with Ian to give
him an ideal of what was coming since we didnât stop to talk as we left
McKinney.
Soon we were tired enough and got a good nightâs sleep. About 5:15 AM
I woke, lay there about fifteen minutes, and then was up, showered, and
ready for the first real day of the Ozarks!

To be continued?
