Re: [ST] Suspension upgrade (was: Sprint ABS)

Emile,

We're of similar weight and I too tend to travel regularly with luggage and
occasional pillion.

This is how I set up my '04 ST FWIW.

Avon Azaro (Av45/46) tyres, 36F 38R Psi.
Rear sag set to 35mm.
Rear damping set up as per manual for rider and pillion.

Front Sag set to 35mm on standard springs.
Racetec emulators installed, set at 1.75 turns, 10wt oil, 125mm airgap.

If I was carrying a pillion I'd wind on some rear preload to compensate, add
one ring of front preload and inflate the rear tyre to 42psi. All damping
settings were left as described above.

This setup worked fine for commuting, touring, working (I'm a riding
instructor) and trackdays. My original '99 ST also needed stiffer fork
springs but the '04 didn't need them.

A topbox was only ever added when the storage was needed as it does affect
the way the bike corners at speed.

This setup worked for me and the way I ride.
It may not work for you but it should get you into the ballpark.

I know a lot of people suggest 15wt oil for the forks but with our lower
European temperatures I found that the thinner 10wt oil works better.

If you're going to spend any money on suspension I'd strongly suggest that
the emulators be your first investment after the tyres. For your weight the
stock springs should be fine.
