Re: [ST] st Digest, Vol 10, Issue 23

Low speeds are very common.

Dropped my 04 St at an intersection. Idled up feet up just waiting for a car
to clear the intersection then rolled on the throttle and started the lean.
Engine switched off, mighty struggle to keep it up with a few hops as
forward momentum turned to fall over, then gently lowered it onto the road.
This one turned out to be a fault with the bike, engine switching off at low
revs, took the guys at Triumph to intervene and get the dealer to sort it
out.

Also had a Suz Marauder 1600 at the same time. Fired up to ride off then
remembered didn't have wallet. Put down the sidestand, hopped off and walked
up the steps, opened the door to walk inside, just to hear the crash as it
fell off the sidestand...EXPENSIVE. Turned out there was a little bump in
the cement that stopped the stand from going fully into lock. The vibration
of the twin was enough to rock it over centre. Since then it's take a good
hard look before leaving the bike.

All this after 35 years riding with three accidents:

Total gearbox lockup on a 750 Bonneville 5 spd less than 6 months old,
dropped BSA Firebird when clipped road markings on a curve in the wet
(before they put sand in the paint), Busted leg and totalled bike when a
learner driver did a u-turn without looking or signalling.

Well to be honest there were probably 20-30 get-offs racing dirt bikes
including a couple of spectaculars on Thompson's Track (Only Kiwi
Waikato/Bay Of Plenty off road riders would know about that jewel - runs
over the Kaimai mountain range, lots of wash-outs, large drop offs, fallen
logs etc to focus the mind.)

More close calls than I care to remember in Sydney traffic, but the low
speed and driveway ones are the ones that make you hope like hell no one was
watching.

I'm beginning to think that low speed or even stand still drops are a lot
more common than I ever thought. I did it with a loan bike. My '99 ST was in
for a major service and they gave me a demonstrator 2004 ST for a week. I
promptly dropped it that night when I forgot about my disc lock for the
first time in years.

My partner is on the mailing list for Girls Ride Out, a bike club for girls,
in Sydney Australia. Some of the stories from there are incredible. More
than a few of them seem to drop their bikes everytime they think about
riding. Sometimes on both sides! One remark was to the effect that "they
must be made to do that"...

I Brilliantly managed to drop my one week old bike.

Bummer.

I didn't leave it in gear, kicked out the side stand, started getting off
and it rolled forward. Next thing I knew crash - me lying under the bike
after not being able to stop it falling, and my mate Johan laughing at my
stupidity. I cant say I saw the funny side at the time, I was seriously
p#$$ed off.

My neighbors are giving me skew looks at the language they heard at 7 on a
Sunday morning.

I got the quote today for the repairs (thank %$d for insurance) : R8 400 (US
$1200) to replace a fairing panel, flicker, crank case cover, mirror and
clutch lever.

I could probably have most of it 95% repaired for under R1 000, but I'd
rather pay the insurance excess and get it sorted properly.

I can honestly say that the RS side stand was a lot more positive and
stiffer than the Daytona setup.

Got the t-shirt on that one. I have never *touch desk* dropped a bike
at speed, but dropped my TDR250 in my front garden, my XJ600 when I
moved it about half an inch when parked, with me standing on the
right-hand side. The sidestand flipped up and it went over. And 4
months after I got the ST I pulled away with the disc lock on. That
f'in' hurt. Pride, leg and wallet.

From other bikers I know, I'm guessing that 0 to 1mph drops are a hell
of a lot more common than crashes. But we only tell other bikers about
the slow ones, 'cause they feel more stupid!

Found out the hard way that full handlebar lock came quicker than

Chris,

I experienced the insurance industry in the UK in '95. I bought a GSX600F
for 3000GBP. None of the insurance companies would recognise my insurance
history as it wasnt in the UK, so the full cover premium was around 1300GBP!
Over a third of its value was over the top so I opted for third party fire &
theft which was still expensive.

The fact that not having vehicle insurance in the UK is a criminal offence
certainly doesnt help to keep the prices down.

Sorry to hear that.

When I dropped my RS at < 20m.p.h. I decided to use my comprehensive
insurance to cover the 2300GBP of damage.

The fallout was that I have not been able to use that insurance firm
again as they hiked the premium despite no-claim-bonus (NCB) now
building. In case you think I'm exaggerating:

Fully comp in 2002 with 6 months of post-test riding - 750GBP. Fully
comp from same broker for 2005 and 2years NCB and 3 years riding
experience, 3500GBP.

I am currently Third Party Fire & Theft (TPFT) for 220GBP.

So sorry about that mark.

I did that on a regular basis with my K12RS and that's what
triggered me to change for lighter bike. But it was actually close to
285 Kg.

I am not sure you shouldn't attempt a repair by a good painter rather
than changing
the part unless something is really out. Event hat, those fairings are
gluable w/ pvc glue.
Event he stickers can be bought.
And about the insurance you'd rather make the math about the premium
rise before using it this time.

Don't forget however that the fairing is for protecting the rest. For
the slider, it's OK if it doesn't put your
frame in jeopardy. I saw some that broke their engine mounting point
trying to protect a piece of plastic.

My 2 cents

Now I just have to convince the wife she wants one................

I know that some of the folks on here are HSTA members from Ohio. Gary
Blinn, the guy that laid out the routes for the HSTA Fly By rally, and was
recently featured in their magazine/newsletter, passed away this morning
from a massive heart attack. Gary loved riding and ripping it up in the
twisties of WV and OH. He sure knew his way around the Ohio river valley.
Really good guy. I've ridden with him and his Pittsburgh area riding buddies
several times. He'll be missed for sure. The word is filtering out via the
various web forums and stuff and people are being encouraged to let others
know that knew him.
