If you want to bypass those areas on the way north and don't need to
stop in DC and are planning on slabbing it all the way I recommend the
following:
In NC get on I-26 west
In Columbia, NC take I-77N
Near Wytheville, VA take I-81N
In Scranton, PA take I-380S to I-84E
In Newburgh, NY take I-87N
South of Albany take I-90E
South of Worcester, MA take I-190N
North of Worcester, MA take I-290E
At end of 290 take I-495N
At end of 49f take I-95N

If you must stop in DC then take I-270 to I-70W to I-81N

You will completely bypass the major cities. The only problem areas will
be, Charlotte, Harrisburg, Scranton, Springfield and Worcester. I take
part of that route when traveling from Savannah to NJ. It adds 50 miles
to the trip but saves me time by avoiding DC and Baltimore. My best
times are inland route: 12.5 hours, I-95: 14 hours.

On it's way.
