Re: [ST] other topic: world cup

I think these numbers aren't necessarily from the stereotypical "Americans" being more interested in soccer than hockey. If you note, they include the spanish-speaking station, and most Spanish-speaking immigrants are not from nortern climates and brought up on hockey. I'm dancing around a sensitive issue these days (and not stating anything other than the background of this statistic), but it's always been true that Latin countries are more interested in soccer than hockey. It's just now that a large number of these Latin/Spanish speaking people are in the US these days, and have brought their following of soccer with them. If Norway decided to move to the US, we might find the cross-country skiing would have a larger viewing audience than many traditional American sports.

Taken from IMDB.com - who'd have thought? ; ))

"World Cup Beating Stanley Cup

Although there has been much debate in recent years
over whether Americans have much interest in soccer,
one thing has certainly emerged from the TV ratings
over the past week: they're more interested in soccer
than they are in ice hockey. According to Nielsen
Research, Spanish-language Univision has been
averaging 2.3 million per World Cup telecast while ABC
and ESPN2 have averaged 2 million -- a total of 4.3
million. By contrast, Monday's Game 4 of the Stanley
Cup playoffs on NBC drew 3.1 million total viewers,
despite airing in primetime. Wednesday's Game 5
improved to 3.8 million viewers but still failed to
beat the totals for the World Cup."
