Agreed.  The lower pressure allows the tire to flex more, and the extra flexing causes the rubber to heat up more. The hotter rubber means the rubber is softer, and thus scrubs off more easily.

As to lowering the pressure, that will only cause the tire to heat up
more quickly and possibly wear out sooner (I think).
