Glad things are turning out OK.  Yes you need to have the right type of
spring compressor to fit around the pre-load adjuster.  There is a pin to
take out and clip to remove to get the adjuster off.  After that just put on
the new spring, compress again and put on the adjuster again.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety
deserve neither liberty nor safety.
