Re: [ST] ST compared to other "faster" bikes (was ST alternatives)

That's why everyone needs something like the Dragon or a track day. You can ease into pushing a little more, a little more, a little more....until it is too far or you are simply uncomfortable.

Over the last year, I actually found that the Avon 45/46 tires, which I have loved, do not cut it as I have increased my speed and comfort. I was consistently pushing the front tire (enough in control to not tuck), and having trouble keeping the rear well planted. I put on the Metzeler Sportec M-1, and have been able to further my comfort level, increase my corner entry and holding speed, and become even faster. These things are sticky and awesome! The down side is the rear M-1 lasted only 2000 miles... The front looks like it might last 4000 miles at this rate. Definitely riding faster and harder these days as I have never gone through tires this quicklly before. To note, I was forced to get a new tire while at the Dragon and am trying the M-1's replacment - the Sportec M-3. I'll report on how these hold up. I also have a track day coming up on the 21st - we'll see how they do.

Every rider has his/her own level of competence. Sunday four of us
took a run out to central Oregon. At one point, south of Maupin (out
in the middle of nowhere - enter "Maupin, OR" into Google maps and
click 'hybrid') two riders swapped bikes ('03 S3 and '05 Sprint) and
something was said about riding them like they were stolen. After a
few minutes at my usual moderate (halfast, right?) pace, I realized
the others were disappearing over the horizon! I sped up to the point
of serious contemplation about how fast I could go through turns that
I usually just cruised through. There's very little room for error
when you're outside your normal window of comfort!
