I like this appraoch best.  I have held the front level in as far as possible for several seconds a number of times to reduce the lever travel, this seems to help all of the time.  I think I well try and clean the pistons in about 10,000 miles or whenever the lever gets soft again.

I have always been afraid of putting any kind of liquid on the pads themselves or the rotor.
