I think what matters in a compressor is how many cfm @ psi it makes.  That all depends on what type of air tools you use and how many will be operating at one time.  Match that with the tools you'll be using and you'll be fine.

As far as oiless vs. oil, don't think it matters for the average home garage warrior as we typically don't use it as often as 
a professional establishment.

I guess the answer is boils down to what you will be doing with it, how often you use it, and how much you want to spend.
My personal usage I can get by with the cheaper $199 Home Cheapo compressor/tool package.

I've heard of people doing this but I've never done it because all my 
compressors use oil. Besides, I figure that the motors will crap out 
before the tank rusts enough to compromise its structural integrity. 
Although there is probably no harm in doing it.
