Re: [ST] Chain Options and Stalling

Since I have to get under the tank to take care of my sticky throttle
cables, what solvent did you use on the stepper motor. Mine seems to be
fine, but I might as well clean it up while I'm in there. Probably time
for a fuel filter too.

I used an RK, 530XSO chain.

As far as the occasional stall and "jerky throttle response" around
3000-4000 RPM. Been there done that. I wouldn't call it jerky throttle
response though. What I experienced was holding the throttle steady I'd
feel a pulsing or surging, but the RPM didn't appear to change (at least
not visible on the dial). The problem got progressively worse until I
stalled every time I shut off the throttle.

What temporarily solved my problem was a new TUNE and cleaning the the
idle stepper motor with a solvent. I say temporary because it's
beginning to exhibit that surging again and the periodic stall while
idling. I'm sure it'll get progressively worse as before.

Good thing I got the tuneboy. I'm going to run the data collection
feature and take it for a 5 minute ride to try to troubleshoot the issue
and see what's going on, beyond the tune and dirty stepper motor.

My gut is telling me that maybe the ECU isn't holding the data for very
long or it somehow gets corrupted after a time (in this case a year or
less). I say this because when I first got the tuneboy it couldn't
download a copy of the tune already loaded in the ECU. It didn't
checksum right, like it was corrupt or something. So I risked
installing the new tune in hope that I didn't need to revert back. DAMN
COMPUTERS. Hope Microsoft didn't design my ECU ;-)

Anyway, that's my experience. Hope it helps.

Hello All,

My 2000 RS has 17k miles and the chain is needing to be replaced. Any
suggestions on type/brand of chain?

Also, I'm getting an occasional stall and somewhat jerky throttle
response, mainly at lower 3000-4000 rpm. It's a new condition.
Sometimes it will stall when I pull in the clutch as I'm rolling to a
stop. Once in a while it will stall while idling.

It had a major tune up by Great Bay (good Triumph dealer) about 3 years
ago when it had 11,500 miles.
