[ST] '00 RS Running Rough - Resolved

Just wanted to share my experience. After a new tune and CO reset, my
bike had stopped stalling, but was still running a bit rough, stumbling
at constant/light throttle.

Turned out the coolant temp sensor was bad. My guess is it was reading
cold all the time, making the engine run rich, which was why at wide
open throttle, the bike went great, but when hot, at constant light
throttle, it was loading up on fuel and causing a bit of
popping/stuttering.

Now the bike runs great!

BTW, there was no code stored for the faulty sensor.

Don

Hi Don,
Go back to the dealer and have them do 3 things if they haven't already.
1)Reset the IAC valve.
2)Reset the closed throttle position.
3)Set the CO (not the CO2) to 3%-4%.
They should have done all this if they updated your tune, but a lot of
them don't. Great Bay has an excellent reputation, but just make sure
they did all that. All these things must be done with the Game Boy and
a gas analyzer. If they don't have a gas analyzer, find another dealer
that does.

If it still does it, check the 3 corrugated vacuum lines that are
attached to the IAC valve (otherwises known as the stepper motor) for
leaks. They were notorious for cracking.

Good Luck,

Subject: [ST] '00 Sprint RS running rough, service issues

Hey Everyone,

My Sprint RS started to run rough, occasional stalling when idling and
seemed to be "lurching" a bit when at slow role on of throttle or at
constant throttle.....like the engine wanted to go, but then would pull
back and go again.

I brought it to Great Bay in Hampton. I told them what was going on.
All they ended up doing was a CO2 check and downloaded a new tune.

The stalling is gone, but it starts hard when cold and still
"burbles/stumbles" when in traffic accelerating moderately or at
constant throttle, especially noticeable in first or second gear.

I also seem to notice a fuel smell, which makes me wonder if the bike is
running rich. Almost as if the choke is stuck open on a carbureted
bike.

So I'm bringing it back in today. The bike has new plugs and had a full
service/valves done 5k miles ago. I've also run several bottles of
Techron through and cleaned the throttle body.

My guess is that either ignition timing is off, or some kind of sensor
is out of calibration/going bad, possibly making the bike run rich. In
cars with mass air flow sensors, I've seen them go bad without throwing
an engine code while giving the car symptoms as if the fuel pump were
going bad.

Any suggestions on what I should make sure Great Bay does?

Thanks,
Don
