Re: [St] [ST] Biker ailments

Hi Marc,

I feel for ya, buddy!

15 years ago I was out for a fast ride with some sport bike friends in Montreal, Canada. I had just purchased a Honda ST1100. I had a high speed get-off in a back road curve that had an unhealthy smattering of gravel on the shoulder. Spent the afternoon in the hopsital with everyone - including me - remarking on how I had not broken any bones even though I hit my head hard enough to be out for several minutes. The highlight of that day is that I remember coming to just as the ambulance team was loading me onto the strecher. It had obviuosly been many minutes before they arrived on scene, simply because we were a ways out of town. One of the first things I noticed is that I did not have my helmet on as I was being tightly strapped to a very hard backboard. Only much later in the day (when I finally got off the f**king board) did I ask one of my riding buddies what happened to my helmet. I was told that me and my bike had slid and tumbled (the police
officer said she counted five motorcycle tumble marks in the farmer's field) about a hundred metres. Apparently, I walked back to the edge of the road, removed my skid lid and collapsed. I don't remember anything between the feeling of the back tire starting a low side slide and the ambulance crew talking to me on the stretcher!

Alright, I came in on the trashed ankle cue. Of all the scrapes and bruises, my right ankle was the worst. I tore all the ligaments in the joint. I vividly recall one nurse remarking to another (I am not sure she intended me to hear) that sometimes it is better to break an ankle than tear ligaments. At any rate, after spending three weeks at home barely moving (I needed help just to go from a sitting to a standing position since every muscle in my body hurt so much!), I, too, started some physio. While my right ankle is still discernable larger that the left, I have full use of it again for running, cyclling and, of course, motorcycling thansk to a good physio team.

Hang in there and we look forward to hearing your riding stories this (African) summer - right about the time I should be riding my carving board in the middle of a North American winter!

Cheers,

Brian

Hi All,

I'm now in my seventh week of recovery after trashing my ankle.

I've started the physio last week, going OK except I cant put full weight on
the ankle yet, so I'm still on a crutch to walk.

Its pretty stiff, and I did some hectic stuff to the ligaments, so who knows
when its strong enough to ride agin.

Anyway - to the point: I've decided to flog my 06 Daytona and get something
more comfy and laid back. The bike is standing in Triumph Cape Town.

I'm thinking to get either and ST, or maybe a break from Triumph for a while
and go for a Yamaha Fazer or a Kawasaki ZRX1200R (the eddie lawson replica).

I've ridden the ST, but not the others. Anyone tried them?

06 Daytona 955 - pristine
