<All this talk of solenoids and starters makes me think of the
simplicity of my 1949 Chevy truck. It had no solenoid. It had a pedal
next to the accelerator that pressed on the mechanical equivalent of
the relay to mash the contact bar and put current to the starter
motor. There was something quite satisfying about mashing that pedal
and the accelerator at the same
time to make it start.>

my '40 Chevy sedan had the same setup, a mechanical linkage on the
starter that engaged the flywheel and made the power connection. no
Bendix, no solenoid, very simple.

<I'm afraid there is no good place to mount such a basic device on a
bike though. ;-)
