[ST] Mystery Oil Leak on my 01 ST

OK, I am seeking the help of the bike minded. I have not ridden the bike in about two weeks and at that time put about 200mi on it, washed it (seriously, I did, waxed it too), added about a cup of clean oilput and it away. It has 18750mi on the clock. This am I was about to run through the 18K service and I noticed a couple of tablespoons of oil under the Sprint. The oil on the floor was dirty and old looking. I removed the plastics on the RHS since that is where the my last leak was located (replaced a blown clutch cover gasket) and noticed that the oil ran down the outer aluminum frame down tube.

I put the bike on the side stand to getter a better view of the RHS and immediately had fuel running down the sidestand. At least it looked like fuel. Couple of tablespoons. Back onto the centerstand, I pulled the LHS plastics and the tank. Fuel and some residue was on the alternator and streaked onto the sidestand. After pulling the tank, I did not notice any gaskets out of the ordinary, no hoses out of place and everything tight. All the drain hoses and crank case breather lines were in place.

However, UNDER the tank I noticed the foam was saturated with fuel or some oily thin liquid. The tank sits ontop of the airbox. The airbox had minimal signs of fuel leaking on it. At the bottom of the fuel tank, on the lowest point where the fuel management system is located, including the fuel sending unit, there was some moisture in this area. A recall was out on the sending unit as it has a tendency to leak. I checked and my bike falls out of the recall range. I set the tank onto a piece of carboard to see if anything drips tonight. The staining underneath was on the longish flat side and the bottom of the lowest point.

But what would cause a stain on the underside? A crack in both layers of the tank? If the sending unit was leaking (at the lowest point) why would there by staining on the longish flat side which is about 6 inches higher?

I dont think that the oil on the floor was oil, I think it was fuel mixed with oil chain wax fling and such. I dunno. I could find any signs of a true oil leak.

  Augh!!
