Re: [ST] Mystery Oil Leak on my 01 ST--sorta solved

Hey Dan--Seems the BMW crowd around here has been chatting the ethanol issue for some time indicating that it speeds the deterioration of plastics and the like. Hence my bringing it up. The guys were thinking that this urban myth might have a confirmation.

The tank on the 01 is slightly larger than the 03. By about 1/2 gal, from what I recall. And it was my understanding too that it was a double walled tank. Which is even more puzzling. Once I removed the fuel to below the point of the leak, it stopped.

Anyone remove the fuel leveler, sensor from the bottom of the tank? What is up in there? Can you tell if it is a double walled tank?

I have a bud here that does the epoxy lining of bike tanks but with the internal fuel pump this might not be an option. I have not talked with him about this, other than an internal "patch" is better than an external one.

Never heard of it happening, Todd, but it shouldn't be caused by the ethanol
in gasoline. If that were the case, it would be a widespread problem in
lots of plastic tanked vehicles, wouldn't it? Yours is the first I've heard
of, and something like that would be sure to bring a lawsuit here in the
good old USofA. And I work for a company that does litigation support for
several auto manufacturers, and I know at least one of them uses some sort
of plastic in some of their fuel tanks...

Boy that was a long-winded way to say that its probably not due to ethanol.
Any sign of wear at that point? Is the fuel tank the same on your bike as
it is on my '03? I thought that the plastic "tank" that is visible is
really like a shell for the actual tank...
