Re: [ST] [RS] 2001 RS starter engine dead ?

How about some diagnosis, instead of throwing parts at the problem?

Go to the starter solenoid - it's at the other end of the heavy black
wire which attaches to the starter - and measure for battery voltage
to the _small_ trigger wire, while the starter button is depressed
(-.5v would be acceptable).

Ya got voltage? Then the starter actuation circuit to the solenoid is
intact. Does the solenoid click? Are all the associated electrical
connections starting at the battery terminals, clean and tight? Don't
just look at them. Disconnect them, clean with a small wire brush or
sandpaper and reconnect using dielectric grease to keep out moisture
and prevent corrosion. Remember to check the ground path as well.

Is the voltage way less than battery voltage? Here's a good article
on voltage drops:
http://www.aa1car.com/library/voltage_drop_testing.htm

No voltage? Turn the bars back and forth and start wiggling wires and
operating interlock switches _while the starter button is depressed_.

Here's a pretty good resource for making sense of many things
motorcycle:

And the specific area in question:

Good luck,
