Re: [ST] [RS] 2001 RS starter engine dead ?

Simply put, a solenoid is a heavy duty relay. It's needed to handle
the high current loads required to crank the engine. Here's a
schematic:

make the engine start ?<

The solenoid doesn't care where it gets its signal. It can be from
the starter button, via the interlocks or from an external source like
your jumper wire. If the solenoid were bad you wouldn't be able to
start your bike the way you described. Hmmm, unless...

>>Go to the starter solenoid - it's at the other end of the heavy
black wire which attaches to the starter - and measure for battery
voltage to the _small_ trigger wire, while the starter button is
depressed (-.5v would be acceptable).<<

A solenoid typically has three connectors. A large wire from the
battery (1), another large wire to the solenoid (2) and a small wire
(3) from the starter switch. I'd assumed you were jumping from (1) to
(3). If so, and the engine won't crank then the solenoid is probably
bad.

OTOH, if you are jumping directly from one heavy gauge wire on the
solenoid to the other (1 to 2) then you'd get lots of sparks but the
engine could crank and start, I guess.

I'm outta here,
