[ST] Help needed for the old-time Newbie rider to the List

Hi Gang,

My frustration at being a long-time rider, but new-timeTriumph owner continues to grow!!!

I just turned over 800 kms today so I decided to do the initial oil change on my '06 Sprint ST.
After dutifully visiting the dealer to purchase a Fram oil filter at $9 Cdn (vs ~$20 for the Triumph item (which I suspect my local autoshop has cheaper still)), I went out ot my garage to do this most basic of maintenance chores. En route, I pulled out the owner's manual to see how to strip off the bodywork. To my mild surprise, there was ... nothing!

OK, says I to myself, that means that removing the skin is soooooo simple Triumph did not bother to spill any ink over it OR (come sayeth my doubting second nature) it is so complicated that only the factory authorized dealer is "authorized" to do this deed!.

Moreover, after reading pages 57-62 and 101-104 and examining the engine cases, I know what type of oil needs to go where but nowhere does it tell me how much!!!

So, after removing about 20 fasteners, I managed to remove the left half of the lower fairing and uncover the oil filter. Upon removing the oil cap and oil filter, I drained 300 cc of of used oil (yikes!) out of the engine with the bike on the centre stand. Based on past experiences with about 15 bikes over the past 30 years, I dumped 2.5 litres of fresh oil into the filler hole. Then I dipped the dip stick and noted that I had grossly over-filled the cases.

So, can someone please tell me what secret handshake or twitch of the nose I failed to perform in this exercise???
I.E. How much oil goes into an 06 ST and why did so little oil drain out (without the oil light illuminating on my dash earlier today?).

The dealer is closed on Sunday evening so calling him/her is not an option.
Moreover, I go to work Monday morning on a human-powered two-wheeled vehicle so the ST will not be moving for several days.

Comments welcome!
