I might have this wrong but as far as I've been told you're definitely 
not supposed to thumb the starter the instant after you turn the key.  In 
addition to the fuel system pressurizing the computer also takes several 
readings from the various sensors.  I also seem to remember that the 
motor intentionally never fires on the first or second revolution of the 
starting sequence.

For similar reasons this is also why you always want to shut the bike off 
with the key and not the kill switch.  Using the key allows the computer 
a moment to register the final position of those same sensors.  The kill 
switch shuts everything down instantly and really should only be used in 
emergencies.

At least that's what the experts have told me, accuracy is not guaranteed.
