Re: [ST] Weekly Charging of Battery needed...Explanation?

Hi Nate,

That make sense. I generally do wait until the whine has finished before
hitting the starter - sometimes I forget though and it won't even turn over
the first time I hit the button (which causes my heart to miss a beat :)

I also never use the kill switch to turn the bike off - never really
understood the need for a kill switch on a bike when, generally, the key is
right by the side of it (I know some bikes have the key elsewhere).

Cheers,

Kevin

Kevin,

I might have this wrong but as far as I've been told you're definitely
not supposed to thumb the starter the instant after you turn the key. In
addition to the fuel system pressurizing the computer also takes several
readings from the various sensors. I also seem to remember that the
motor intentionally never fires on the first or second revolution of the
starting sequence.

For similar reasons this is also why you always want to shut the bike off
with the key and not the kill switch. Using the key allows the computer
a moment to register the final position of those same sensors. The kill
switch shuts everything down instantly and really should only be used in
emergencies.

At least that's what the experts have told me, accuracy is not guaranteed.
