Good point. A couple of those are in my kit too. 

Also some cable ties--friend of mine broke his throttle cable on his Duc while we were touring and we rigged it with a cable tie. Got us the 100mi to the Duc shop to replace it. 
   
  Pair of vice grips are in my kit. Seen those made into a shift lever.

Raid ride, one guy hit gravel and slid his Bonneville. Another guy in the group 
clamped a large allen wrench to the broken shift lever with a couple 1" hose
